The Rise of Health and Wellness Retreats in Guatemala

In recent years, Guatemala has emerged as a premier destination for wellness tourism, attracting visitors from around the globe seeking relaxation, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection with nature. Nestled amid lush jungles, towering volcanoes, and serene lakes, Guatemala offers an idyllic setting for wellness retreats, particularly those focusing on yoga, holistic health practices, and natural therapies.

Some will argue that this is not new. San Marcos la Laguna has a long history of wellness and mindfulness. But it is a sure thing it has spread and there is other destinations around the country that has embraced the practice of mindfulness and meditation.

Lake Atitlan

A popular destination is Lake Atitlan with its serene waters and majestic volcanoes, which hosts numerous yoga retreats offering diverse programs tailored to various levels of experience.  These retreats often include daily yoga sessions, meditation workshops, and holistic healing practices allowing participants to disconnect from their hectic lives and reconnect with themselves.

Rio Dulce

We recently attended a wellness retreat set in a private house in Rio Dulce. The young Yoga teacher has a house set in the middle of the jungle and we had daily yoga classes. Combined with a visit to a hot spring waterfall call Finca Paraiso. The meditation held at night connected with the hot waterfall and the energy of the group.  The next day we navigated on a beautiful boat through Jungle covered wall Canon of Rio Dulce having a Journaling session with a journalist guest.  Then we swam in the waters and connected with some locals selling coconut crafts. It was an incredible experience.

Antigua

Antigua is a beautiful historic Colonial city that is nearest to Guatemala City and the International airport. It is easy to get and excellent cuisine. Many wellness centers and retreats offer packages that combine yoga sessions, spa treatments and visits to thermal springs making Antigua the perfect destination as a base. From here you can visit coffee farms, hike to the volcano, have excellent yoga sessions inside art galleries and combine it with lake Atitlan visit.

Hot Thermal Springs: Nature's Therapeutic Embrace

The volcanic activity in Guatemala has blessed the country with numerous hot springs, known for their therapeutic properties. These thermal springs, rich in minerals, are sought after their ability to alleviate stress, soothe muscle pain, and improve overall health. Fuentes Georginas, located near the town of Zunil, is one of the most famous hot springs in the country. Set in a lush cloud forest, these springs offer a serene environment for visitors to soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Other notable hot springs are found in Rio Dulce.
