Whether you plan on taking a short holiday or a full 10-day itinerary you can prepare your trip so you can make the most of your time.  Guatemala is small, but there is lots to see.

PLAN AHEAD

There is only one international flight to Guatemala and that is Aurora International Airport (GUA).  There are lots of red eye flights to Guatemala. There are direct flights from major airports of USA with major US airlines.  There are also from Mexico City. If you are coming from Europe and wish to avoid the US you can come from Madrid with IBERIA.

Departure Tax

Guatemala levies a departure tax of $30 on outbound air passengers, which should be included in your fare.

WEATHER & WHEN TO GO

Guatemala is known for being the Eternal Spring. But be prepared for sunshine, rain, cool mountain breeze and mud in the jungle. Guatemala is small but lots of microclimates.

Dry Season (November - March): Perfect sunny days, but be prepared by an ocasional shower. Specially if you are going to the jungle or cloud forest. December and January temperature drops so be prepared for cold temperatures during night.

Wet Season (or green season) April - October: normally with sunny mornings but showers in the afternoon.

Low Season (April – September): Prices drop, crowds thin out at archaeological sites, and booking accommodations is rarely necessary. Daily afternoon rains can make traveling chilly in the highlands and a bit muddy in the jungle.

Shoulder: (October and November):  Rains begin to ease up, but October is peak hurricane season. Mild temperatures and clear days make this good time to travel and hikein the highlands.

High Season: (December – April): Around key times Christmas, New Years and Easter hotel prices are significantly.  We have found that people start coming for thanks giving and is busy all the way to easter.

BEFORE ARRIVAL

Communication

Guatemala has modern methods of communication.  In Guatemala City and Antigua, many places provide on-line services. Before arrival we recommend asking your phone company for International Wifi. When calling from abroad, dial the international access code (011 from the U.S.) and then the country code, 502, before the seven-digit number.

Time

Guatemala is six hours behind GMT.  It is on the same time zone as Central Standard Time in North America.  There is no daylight savings time.

Electricity

Guatemala’s electricity supply is 110V AC, the same as in the U.S.  Most outlets accept two-pronged plugs with flat prongs of the kind used in the U.S.  Three-pronged outlets are occasionally found, but these also accept two-pronged plugs.

Money

Guatemala money currency is Quetzales. Touristy places accept dollars but they need to be in perfect conditions. People know that bank does not accept ripped of or written bills. So make sure you bring crispy new bills and they need to be in perfect condition.

Major credit cards are accepted in Guatemala main restaurants and hotels. ATM: in all major cities you can get cash through the cash machines, using credit or debit cards and a pin code. Always have a plan B in case they don't work.

PAYMENT

A full deposit must be made to be able to confirm all your bookings. All hotels will be just reserved, and hotels give us confirmation until we make the payment.  If you don´t want to loose your room (specially on high season) make sure to make full payment.

It is cheaper to make a International Wire Transfer than to make a Credit Card Payment. Credit card companies charge us 4-6% commission on each transaction and will be added if you choose credit card.

Rates are shown in USD$ and include 12%VAT and 10% INGUAT (in hotel accommodation).
